The Suez Canal connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea, saving ships weeks of travel. It was officially opened in 1869 and is about 120 miles long. Unlike the Panama Canal, it has no locks—it’s a sea-level canal. It was nationalized by Egypt in 1956, sparking an international crisis. It can accommodate ships up to 240,000 deadweight tons. Around 12% of global trade passes through it. The 2021 blockage by the Ever Given drew global attention. It has undergone expansion projects to improve traffic flow.
