What is the role of the Palestinian Authority?

The Palestinian Authority (PA) is a semi-autonomous government body established in 1994 to administer parts of the West Bank. It was created as part of the Oslo Accords peace process between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). The PA manages civil affairs, security coordination, and some infrastructure within its jurisdiction. However, its authority is limited and often challenged by Israeli military control and political divisions with Hamas. The PA seeks to negotiate statehood and represent Palestinian interests internationally. Its effectiveness and legitimacy remain subjects of debate among Palestinians and the global community.
