Who designed the Eiffel Tower and when was it built?

The Eiffel Tower was designed by engineer Gustave Eiffel and his company, and it was completed in 1889 for the Exposition Universelle (World's Fair) held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. Though Eiffel didn’t personally draw the tower’s initial plans, his name became forever associated with the structure.
