What is the Heel Stone at Stonehenge?

The Heel Stone is a single large upright stone located just outside the main stone circle of Stonehenge. It plays a significant role in the monument’s solar alignments, particularly during the summer solstice. On that day, the sun rises directly above the Heel Stone when viewed from the center of the circle, suggesting its purpose was astronomical. The stone weighs about 35 tons and stands roughly 16 feet tall, emphasizing its importance in the original design of the site.
