What types of mounds were built at Cahokia?

Cahokia featured several types of mounds, including platform mounds, conical burial mounds, and ridge-top mounds. Platform mounds like Monks Mound were used as bases for important buildings. Conical mounds typically served as burial sites for elite individuals. Ridge-top mounds may have been used for ceremonial or defensive purposes. In total, over 120 mounds were constructed at the site, although only about 70 remain today. The mounds were carefully designed and aligned with celestial events, suggesting a sophisticated understanding of astronomy.
