Conical mounds typically served as burial sites for elite individuals. Ridge-top mounds may have been used for ceremonial or defensive purposes. In total, over 120 mounds were constructed at the site, although only about 70 remain today. The mounds were carefully designed and aligned with celestial events, suggesting a sophisticated understanding of astronomy.
