Who built Carnegie Hall and why?

Carnegie Hall was built by the wealthy industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. He financed the construction as a gift to New York City and to support the arts and culture. The building was designed by architect William Burnet Tuthill, who had a background in both music and architecture. Carnegie envisioned a grand concert space that would inspire artistic excellence and host world-class performances. His vision was realized in the creation of this landmark, which opened with a concert conducted by the great composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
