Durham Cathedral, built in 1093, is considered one of the finest examples of Norman architecture. It houses the shrine of Saint Cuthbert and the tomb of the Venerable Bede. Its rib-vaulted ceilings and massive columns were architectural innovations of the time. The cathedral has survived over 900 years of history, including the Reformation and Civil War. Parts of the Harry Potter films were shot inside Durham Cathedral. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. The cathedral stands majestically above the River Wear, visible from miles away.
