The canal operates with lock chambers that act like water elevators for ships. Vessels enter a lock, watertight gates close, and gravity-fed freshwater raises or lowers the ship between ocean level and Gatun Lake’s elevation. Tugboats and electric locomotives (mules) help guide and position ships precisely. The system relies on massive volumes of freshwater supplied primarily by rainfall captured in the canal’s watershed. Efficient water management is vital to maintain operations, especially in dry seasons. Transits are scheduled and piloted by specialized Panama Canal pilots.
