What is the Panama Canal expansion (Third Set of Locks)?

The Expansion Program, inaugurated in 2016, added a larger lane with new locks at both oceans. These “Neopanamax” locks accommodate wider and deeper-draft ships than the original “Panamax” limits. The project included new water-saving basins, deepening and widening of channels, and improvements to Gatun Lake navigation. As a result, the canal can handle a greater share of the modern container, LNG, and bulk fleets. The expansion significantly increased capacity and revenue. It also altered global shipping routes by enabling larger vessels to choose Panama.
