Santorini was formed by one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history, known as the Minoan eruption, around 1600 BC. This eruption caused the center of the island to collapse, creating the caldera that defines its landscape today. The volcanic activity gave Santorini its unique terrain and rich soil, which is excellent for wine production. The eruption also led to legends linking Santorini with the lost city of Atlantis. Over time, villages were built on the cliffs overlooking the caldera. This dramatic geography is what makes the island so distinctive.
