Many Plains tribes, including the Lakota, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Crow, and others, consider the site sacred. Oral traditions describe its creation and meaning, and the tower is central to ceremonies and cultural practices. Prayer bundles and cloths may be seen respectfully tied in nearby areas. The National Park Service collaborates with tribes to protect cultural resources and traditions. A voluntary June climbing pause acknowledges important cultural observances. Visitors are encouraged to learn and show respect when exploring the monument.
