The official language of Jamaica is English, but most Jamaicans also speak Jamaican Patois (or Patwa). Patois is a Creole language that blends English with African, Spanish, and indigenous influences. While English is used in schools, media, and government, Patois is widely spoken in daily life. Jamaican music, including reggae and dancehall, often features lyrics in Patois. This dual language identity is an important part of Jamaica’s culture.
