Burning Man began in 1986 on a beach in San Francisco before moving to the Black Rock Desert in 1990.
The festival takes place in a temporary city called Black Rock City, built each year from scratch.
Participants, called “Burners,” are encouraged to express themselves through art, costumes, and performances.
The festival is guided by 10 principles, including radical inclusion, gifting, and leaving no trace.
Large-scale sculptures and interactive installations are created and often burned at the end of the festival.
The Man effigy, central to the festival, symbolizes transformation, community, and impermanence.
