Badlands National Park covers over 244,000 acres of sharply eroded formations and prairie.
The park contains fossils dating back 35 million years, including ancient horses and rhinos.
It is home to the largest herd of bison in South Dakota.
The park’s name comes from the Lakota word “mako sica,” meaning “land bad” or “badlands.”
Badlands formations were created over millions of years through erosion by wind and water.
The park features both mixed-grass prairie and striking geological formations.
Prairie dog towns in the park can span several acres and are active throughout the year.
