What is the history of Badlands National Park?

The area now known as Badlands National Park was historically inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Lakota Sioux. It became a National Monument in 1939 and was designated a National Park in 1978. Fossils of ancient mammals dating back millions of years have been found in the region. The park preserves both cultural heritage and geological history. It remains an important site for scientific research and education.
