The Matterhorn was one of the last major Alpine peaks to be climbed, first summited in 1865.
The first ascent ended in tragedy when four of the seven climbers fell to their deaths on the descent.
Its name comes from German words meaning “meadow peak.”
The mountain straddles two countries—Switzerland and Italy—with four distinct faces aligned to the compass points.
The Matterhorn’s image is famously used on the packaging of Toblerone chocolate.
Zermatt has banned cars to preserve the environment, relying on electric vehicles and trains instead.
Despite its beauty, the Matterhorn is one of the deadliest mountains in the Alps, with over 500 recorded climbing fatalities.
The Gornergrat Railway, one of the highest cog railways in Europe, offers some of the best Matterhorn views.
