Most people in tourist areas speak English pretty well, especially younger locals and those in hotels, restaurants, or shops. In smaller towns or rural areas, English may not be as common, but locals are usually patient and helpful. Learning a few basic Portuguese phrases like “obrigado” (thank you) and “bom dia” (good morning) goes a long way and is appreciated. Even with minimal Portuguese, travelers can get by just fine.
