Lebanon's UN Peacekeeping Force Mandate Set to End

The United Nations Security Council voted unanimously on August 29, 2025, to terminate the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) by the end of 2026. This decision marks a significant shift in international peacekeeping strategy after nearly five decades of operations in the region. The move comes amid ongoing tensions between Hezbollah and the Lebanese government, as well as concerns over the effectiveness of UNIFIL's presence. Lebanon has expressed its intention to assume full responsibility for security within its borders. The withdrawal plan will be implemented gradually, with a focus on ensuring stability and supporting Lebanese security forces. The international community will monitor the transition closely to assess its impact on regional peace.
