European Commission President’s Plane Uses Paper Maps After Suspected Russian GPS Jamming

A plane carrying European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was forced to land at Plovdiv Airport in Bulgaria using paper maps after GPS navigation failed, reportedly due to interference. Bulgarian authorities confirmed that the satellite signal feeding the aircraft’s GPS system was “neutralized,” prompting a manual landing aided by ground-based navigation. The incident occurred during von der Leyen’s tour of eastern EU states focused on defense readiness and Ukraine support, underscoring heightened security concerns in the region. The European Commission described the interference as “blatant” and attributed it to Russia, while the Kremlin has denied responsibility. Despite the disruption, the plane landed safely, and von der Leyen’s visit continues, reinforcing calls for stronger European defense capabilities.
