A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan late on Sunday near the Pakistan border, causing widespread destruction in Kunar and neighbouring Nangarhar provinces. Afghan officials reported hundreds of deaths and thousands injured, with provisional tolls varying between about 600 and more than 800 as rescue teams combed collapsed homes. Helicopters and military teams conducted dozens of evacuation flights while landslides and narrow mountain roads hampered access to many isolated communities. Most houses—built from mud and stone—collapsed in the tremor and powerful aftershocks, leaving entire villages flattened and survivors sheltering outdoors. The United Nations and neighbouring countries signalled readiness to assist, but aid agencies warned that limited funding and the difficult terrain will complicate rescue and relief operations.
