The Allerton Hotel opened in 1924 and was one of Chicago’s first high-rise hotels.
The “Tip-Top-Tap” rooftop lounge made it a hot nightlife spot in the 1940s and 1950s.
Its iconic neon sign is still a recognizable part of the Chicago skyline.
The hotel was designed in the Italian Renaissance style, rare for skyscrapers at the time.
It was one of the first hotels in Chicago to offer private rooms instead of shared dorm-style spaces.
In 1999, it was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places.
