Internal Tensions Hamper U.S. Effort to Repair Relations with India

Bilateral relations between the U.S. and India remain strained due to mixed signals within the Trump administration. While Secretary Rubio and U.S. Trade Representative Greer pushed for a tariff-reducing trade deal, President Trump rejected the proposal—insisting instead that India reduce its Russian oil purchases. Trump adviser Peter Navarro added fuel to the fire with inflammatory remarks accusing India of backing Russia in Ukraine, provoking backlash in New Delhi. Prime Minister Modi rebuffed unfavorable trade terms and deepened engagement with Russia and China through regional summits.
