When did RFK Stadium open and what teams played there?

RFK opened in 1961 and was originally called D.C. Stadium before being renamed for Robert F. Kennedy. Over the years it hosted the Washington Redskins (NFL), D.C. United (MLS), the Nationals for a short stretch, and lots of college and international soccer matches. It was one of those rare stadiums with a real mixed-use vibe — football, baseball, soccer, concerts — all in one spot. That made it a community hub for different fan groups and big events. Its long history is part of why it still pops up in city discussions.
