Do I need Spanish to get by in Chile?

Spanish is definitely the main language, but you don’t have to be fluent to get around. A lot of folks in tourist spots—like tour guides, hotel staff, and restaurants—speak English. Still, learning a few basic phrases like “hola” (hello) or “gracias” (thanks) goes a long way. Not only does it help, but locals appreciate the effort. In more remote areas, English isn’t as common, so some Spanish use becomes handy.
