At its narrowest, it’s only about 55 miles wide, making Russia and the U.S. surprisingly close neighbors.
The two islands in the middle — Big Diomede (Russia) and Little Diomede (USA) — are only 2.4 miles apart.
Those islands are separated not just by water but also by the International Date Line, meaning they’re almost a full day apart in time zones.
During the Ice Age, a land bridge called Beringia connected Asia and North America across the strait.
The waters are home to some of the world’s largest marine mammal migrations.
Ideas for a “Bering Strait Tunnel” have been proposed for over 100 years but never built.
