Venezuela's history is marked by its indigenous roots, Spanish colonization, and a struggle for independence. Originally inhabited by Carib and Arawak Indians, the region was claimed by Spain in the 16th century. The country gained independence in 1821 under the leadership of Simón Bolívar, becoming part of Gran Colombia before becoming a separate republic in 1830. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Venezuela experienced political turmoil, including periods of dictatorship and democracy, and has faced significant economic challenges in recent decades.
