What languages are spoken in Senegal?

While French is the official language of Senegal, the most widely spoken local language is Wolof. Wolof has become increasingly prominent in various sectors such as government, academia, and media, reflecting a desire among Senegalese people to reclaim their cultural identity and detach from colonial heritage. Other languages spoken in Senegal include Pulaar, Serer, Jola, and Mandinka, among others. Despite the growing dominance of Wolof, French remains important for regional communication and international relations. The rise of Wolof is also fueled by media innovations, such as the pioneering private radio station Sud FM, which broadcasts in Wolof.
