While French is the official language of Senegal, the most widely spoken local language is Wolof. Other languages spoken in Senegal include Pulaar, Serer, Jola, and Mandinka, among others. Despite the growing dominance of Wolof, French remains important for regional communication and international relations. The rise of Wolof is also fueled by media innovations, such as the pioneering private radio station Sud FM, which broadcasts in Wolof.
