The main language is Spanish, and you’ll hear it pretty much everywhere. On the Caribbean coast, though, people also speak English-based Creole and indigenous languages like Miskito. If you know some basic Spanish phrases, it really helps a lot when traveling around. In tourist areas, you’ll find younger folks and guides who speak some English. Nicaraguans are usually friendly and patient with travelers trying to communicate. Even a few words like “gracias” and “por favor” can go a long way in making connections.
