English is the official language, which is great for travelers who don’t speak Spanish. Creole is widely spoken, mixing English and African influences. Spanish is common in towns and villages near the borders, and Garifuna is spoken by descendants of Afro-Caribbean people on the coast. Maya languages like Q’eqchi’ and Mopan are still alive in some communities. Most locals are multilingual, which makes communication flexible. Tourists can get by easily with English, but learning a few words in Creole or Spanish always gets smiles. Language is part of the cultural charm here.
