Haitians mainly speak Haitian Creole (Kreyòl Ayisyen) and French, but Creole is what most folks use every day. It’s a mix of French, African, and indigenous influences that evolved during colonial times. French is used in schools, government, and official settings, but if you’re chatting in the street, Creole is the heart language. A lot of Haitians also understand some English or Spanish, especially those who work with tourists or have family abroad. You’ll hear vibrant, musical speech full of proverbs and wordplay — it’s really expressive. Learning a few Creole phrases gets you respect fast and makes locals smile. It’s one of the few Caribbean nations where language itself is part of national identity.
