Do I need to speak Catalan to get by in Catalonia?

Not at all! While Catalan is the official language, Spanish is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas. Many locals are bilingual and will switch to English if needed. That said, learning a few Catalan phrases like "Bon dia" (Good day) or "Gràcies" (Thank you) can go a long way and show respect for the local culture. Plus, it's fun to try! Just don't worry if you can't roll your Rs—most people will appreciate the effort.
