It's a big topic. Catalonia has a long history of wanting more autonomy or even independence from Spain. The 2006 Statute of Autonomy declared it a "nation," but the Spanish government didn't recognize that. Tensions peaked in 2017 with an independence referendum that was declared illegal by Spain.
