On the afternoon of October 9, a de facto ceasefire in Gaza was officially declared. This information was confirmed by sources in Egypt. However, the ceasefire will officially begin after the Israeli government approves the agreement.
According to available information, an agreement was signed in Sharm el-Sheikh to implement the first phase of the ceasefire in Gaza, which is expected to include the release of all hostages held by terrorists.
Hamas member Osama Hamdan told the Qatari television channels Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya that the agreement signed in Sharm el-Sheikh represents a "definitive end to the war in the Gaza Strip."
Further, within 24 hours of the signing of the agreement: IDF withdrawal from several areas of Gaza (the so-called "Yellow Line") – from Khan Yunis in the south to Beit Lahiya in the northern Gaza Strip.
Within 72 hours of the signing: the release of all living Israeli hostages without any ceremony, followed by a gradual handover of the bodies of the dead hostages. Preliminary reports indicate that 20 surviving hostages will be released. The bodies of 28 deceased hostages will then be handed over.
Names of hostages kidnapped by terrorists on October 7, 2023, and held in Gaza. The names of the released hostages are listed separately.
In exchange for the release of the Israeli hostages, approximately 2,000 Palestinian prisoners will be released, including 250 serving long-term or life sentences, as well as prisoners from the Gaza Strip. The lists are being finalized.
On the morning of October 9, the IDF issued a statement announcing preparations for the implementation of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza. The statement reads: "In accordance with the instructions of the political leadership and an assessment of the situation, the IDF has begun operational preparations for the implementation of the agreement. As part of this process, preparations and combat protocols for moving to adjusted deployment lines are being implemented. IDF forces remain deployed in the area (of the Gaza Strip) and are prepared for any operational developments."
The IDF's withdrawal from the Strip begins with the withdrawal of the logistics units operating in Gaza City as part of Operation Gideon's Chariots 2. The IDF is reducing its force levels in the Gaza Strip. Starting next week, thousands of reservists will be demobilized.
Effectively, following the IDF's withdrawal, a significant portion of the Gaza Strip will once again be under Hamas control. However, the IDF continues to control a buffer zone within the Strip along the borders, including the "Philadelphia Corridor" in the south.
On the night of October 9, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed US President Donald Trump's announcement that an agreement had been reached on the first phase of the deal with Hamas.
The Prime Minister's Office released the following statement from Netanyahu: "A great day for Israel. Tomorrow I will convene the government to approve the agreement and bring all our precious hostages home. I thank the heroic IDF soldiers and all the security forces whose courage and sacrifice have enabled us to reach this day. I wholeheartedly thank President Trump and his team for their dedication to the sacred mission of freeing our hostages. God willing, together we will continue to achieve all our goals and strengthen peace with our neighbors."
It was then reported that Netanyahu had spoken with Trump, and they "congratulated each other on the historic achievement of signing the agreement to free all hostages."
