Guantanamo Bay is the oldest overseas U.S. naval base, established in 1898 after the Spanish-American War.
Despite the longstanding lease, the Cuban government has cashed only one of the annual rent checks sent by the U.S. since the Cuban Revolution.
The base is surrounded by a minefield that was laid during the Cold War, though efforts have been underway to remove them.
Guantanamo Bay is home to a small community of U.S. military personnel and their families, with amenities like schools and a golf course.
The area produces sugarcane and cotton wool, traditional parts of the local economy in the Guantánamo province.
