What’s the history of Rethymno?

Rethymno has layers of history that go way back. It was once the ancient city of Rhithymna, then it became a Venetian stronghold in the 16th century. After that, the Ottomans took over and ruled for nearly 300 years. You can see all this in the architecture—from the Fortezza fortress to the Rimondi Fountain. The city even played a role in WWII during the Battle of Rethymno. Today, it’s a living museum where history and daily life mix seamlessly.
