Deadly Attack on Funeral in Sudan’s Kordofan Region Raises Alarm

An attack on a funeral gathering in El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan in Sudan, has left at least 40 civilians dead, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. The funeral site, held by army‑aligned forces, came under fire as the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces appear poised to launch a wider offensive in the region. The escalation underscores the intensifying humanitarian crisis in Kordofan and neighboring Darfur zones. Aid agencies warn of mass graves and widespread displacement as fighting disrupts both civilian life and relief operations. Observers fear the violence will further destabilize Sudan’s fragile transition and amplify food insecurity that already affects millions.
