Harding’s family background was mostly English and Scottish, typical of many Americans of his era. There were rumours during his lifetime that he had African American ancestry, but historians found no evidence confirming it. These rumours were often used by political rivals trying to smear him. Harding himself said he didn’t care what people thought and didn’t believe racial background should matter to anyone. His relaxed attitude toward the rumours was unusual for the time. While the rumours were false, the fact that he brushed them off showed a more open-minded attitude compared to many politicians of his era. His family history was rooted mainly in early American settlers.
