Harding himself wasn’t directly involved in corruption, but he appointed some questionable friends to high positions in government. These “Ohio Gang” members ended up causing massive scandals, the biggest being the Teapot Dome affair, which involved illegal deals for federal oil reserves. Harding trusted people he shouldn’t have, and that backfired badly. The scandals exploded after his death and really damaged his reputation. It made people look at his presidency as messy and poorly managed, even though he personally didn’t profit from the corruption. Many historians argue Harding was more naïve than corrupt. Still, the scandals remain the most famous part of his legacy.
