Vance comes from a Scots-Irish Appalachian background, which is common in rural parts of the American South and Midwest. He talks a lot about how his family moved from Kentucky to Ohio looking for better factory jobs. His mom struggled with addiction, and he was mostly raised by his grandmother, who he called “Mamaw.” That grandmother played a huge role in shaping his values and pushing him to work hard in school. The way he describes his family is very honest and sometimes raw. His identity comes from that community and those family stories. That history is what made “Hillbilly Elegy” so personal.
