Phelps has 28 Olympic medals total: 23 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze. This record makes him the most decorated Olympian of all time and the most dominant swimmer ever. He collected medals across five Olympic Games: Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016. He didn’t medal in 2000, but every Games after that was huge for him. His performances often came with world records, especially in butterfly and medley events. Many athletes say his dominance changed how swimmers train. His medal haul is unlikely to be matched anytime soon.
