The company looks at how quickly people start and finish a series, and whether it helps keep subscribers active. Production costs for certain genres, like sci-fi or fantasy, can be extremely high. Netflix also tries to balance new shows with continuing ones, so not everything can get renewed. Fans sometimes get frustrated, but the cancellations usually come from data rather than emotion. In the end, Netflix has to decide what gives the best return for future seasons.
