Bono started playing music with friends after answering a school bulletin board ad looking for band members. The group that formed became U2, though they didn’t know how big they’d become. They practiced constantly and played small gigs around Dublin. Bono took the role of lead singer because he had the most stage presence. The band signed a deal in the late 1970s and quickly built a global fan base. Their early albums showed passion, energy, and a fresh sound. Bono’s voice and lyrics became central to their rise.
