Bono had a fairly normal childhood but also faced emotional challenges early on. His mother passed away when he was young, and that loss deeply affected him. He found comfort in music, which became his way of expressing feelings. In school he wasn’t the quiet type and liked to challenge ideas. He met the future members of U2 through school connections. They formed the band while they were still teenagers. That early friendship eventually became one of rock’s longest-running partnerships.
