At least 40 people killed in a US military operation in Venezuela

At least 40 people, including military personnel and civilians, were killed in a US military operation in Venezuela on the night of January 3, The New York Times reported, citing a senior Venezuelan official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

In its article, the newspaper provided some details of the US strike on Caracas and the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

According to Pentagon officials, more than 150 military aircraft, including fighter jets and bombers, were involved in the mission. They took off from 20 different military bases and US Navy ships for the attack.

Operation Absolute Resolve began with a cyberattack that knocked out power to a large part of Caracas. This allowed the aircraft to approach the city undetected.

The aircraft carried out a series of strikes on the city. A US administration official stated that radar installations and radio transmission towers were primarily disabled.

Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were detained by Delta Force, an elite special forces unit of the US military. They rehearsed the capture operation in an exact replica of Maduro's residence, built in Kentucky. A team of CIA agents infiltrated Caracas and collected intelligence on the president's movements for several months.

Donald Trump claimed that not a single American service member was killed during the operation in Venezuela.
