Venezuela's Supreme Court has appointed Delcy Rodriguez as interim president.

Venezuela's Vice President Delcy Rodriguez must serve as acting head of state in the absence of Nicolás Maduro, the country's Supreme Court has ruled.

The court's statement stated that Rodriguez "assumes the presidency to guarantee the continuity of government and the comprehensive protection of the country."

Earlier on Saturday, Delcy Rodriguez herself addressed the nation on Venezuelan state television, declaring that Nicolás Maduro remains the country's sole legitimate president. Rodriguez condemned the "US armed aggression" against Venezuela, adding that the current government is ready to defend the country's people.

She recorded the video surrounded by her brother, the speaker of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Jorge Rodriguez, Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello, and Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López.
