The Donald Trump administration is working to establish a "compliant" interim government in Venezuela following the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, CNN reports, citing US officials.
The White House, according to the network, prioritizes administrative stability and the restoration of Venezuela's oil infrastructure over an "immediate transition to democracy."
Trump's advisers several weeks ago recognized Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez as a suitable interim alternative to Maduro. Despite her initial statements criticizing the US over the operation in Venezuela, US officials privately expressed optimism about her cooperation with Washington.
According to one of CNN's sources, senior US officials, including US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump's Homeland Security Advisor Stephen Miller, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, are working to establish a government structure for Venezuela. US Interior Secretary Doug Burgam and Energy Secretary Chris Wright have been tasked with persuading American energy companies to return to Venezuela.
Bloomberg reported that Secretary of State Marco Rubio will assume a key administrative role in the US administration of Venezuela following the overthrow of Nicolás Maduro.
After US special forces captured and removed Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, from Venezuela on January 3, Donald Trump announced that the US would govern the country until a "safe, orderly, and sound transition of power." He did not explain how exactly this would occur.
The Supreme Court of Venezuela appointed Vice President Delcy Rodríguez as interim head of state. She condemned "US military aggression," declaring Nicolás Maduro the country's only legitimate president. However, in a statement on January 5, Rodríguez already said she was calling on Trump for peace and cooperation.
