Venezuela's Interim President Appeals to Trump for Peace and Dialogue

Acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodriguez issued a message to US President Donald Trump, calling for Washington's cooperation.

She stated that Venezuela "reaffirms its commitment to peace and peaceful coexistence" and considers its priority to be building "balanced and respectful international relations" with the US and countries in the region, "based on sovereign equality and non-interference."

"President Donald Trump — our people and our region deserve peace and dialogue, not war. This has always been the position of President Nicolás Maduro, and it is the position of all of Venezuela at this time. This is the Venezuela I believe in, the Venezuela to which I have dedicated my life. <…> Venezuela has the right to peace, development, sovereignty, and a future," Rodriguez said in a statement.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said Rodriguez must grant the United States "full access" to the country's resources. "We need full access. We need access to the oil and other resources in their country that will allow us to rebuild their country," CNN quoted the US President as saying.

On January 4, speaking to The Atlantic, Trump said that Delcy Rodriguez "will pay a very high price" if she refuses to cooperate with the US. "If she doesn't do the right thing, she'll pay a very high price, probably even more than Maduro," Trump said.

On January 3, the Supreme Court of Venezuela appointed Vice President Delcy Rodriguez as interim head of state. This came after US special forces kidnapped President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in Caracas and spirited them out of Venezuela to New York. US authorities intend to prosecute Maduro on charges of "narco-terrorism."

At a press conference to discuss the military operation in Caracas, Donald Trump announced that his administration would assume interim control of Venezuela until a "safe, orderly, and sound transition of power" could be achieved. He claimed that Delcy Rodriguez had privately expressed a willingness to cooperate with the United States. However, shortly afterward, the interim president of Venezuela appeared on state television and condemned "US military aggression," declaring Nicolás Maduro the country's only legitimate president.
