Tanzania has a population of around 67 million people, making it one of the most populous countries in Africa. A large portion of the population lives in rural areas, with agriculture forming the backbone of many local economies. Urban centres such as Dar es Salaam and Arusha have grown rapidly in recent years due to internal migration and economic opportunities. The population includes more than 120 ethnic groups, with Bantu peoples forming the largest share. Other groups include Nilotic communities and smaller Asian and Arab minorities, especially in coastal and trading regions. Tanzania’s population is relatively young, with a substantial proportion under the age of 30. This demographic structure plays a role in education, workforce and future development planning.
