Arabic is the official language of Sudan and the most widely spoken language across the country. Many Sudanese also speak regional languages and dialects, reflecting the nation’s cultural diversity. Indigenous languages include Nubian, Fur, Beja and numerous Nilotic languages. English is used in some educational and governmental contexts, although less common than Arabic. Over 400 languages are estimated to be spoken in Sudan’s various ethnic groups. Language practices can vary significantly between urban and rural areas. Linguistic diversity is a key feature of Sudanese identity.
