The dominant religion in Libya is Islam, which plays an important role in the social and cultural lives of most Libyans. Approximately 97 % of the population follow Sunni Islam, with Islamic values integrated into many aspects of daily life and governance. Libya’s constitution recognises Islam as the official religion of the state. Although small Christian and other minority communities exist, they represent only a tiny fraction of the population. Religious festivals, daily prayers, and Islamic customs are central to community life across the country. Mosques are prominent in cities and towns, serving as centres for worship and social gatherings. The role of religion helps shape cultural norms and traditions that Libyans observe.
